The Marriott estimates that 339 million guest records worldwide were affected following a cyber-attack in 2014 on Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc. The attack was undetected until the company was acquired by Marriott.

The personal data may have included names, email addresses, phone numbers, unencrypted passport numbers and others. It is thought that up to seven million people in the UK were affected.

The ICO’s investigation found that Marriott had not followed the GDPR or put appropriate technical or organisational measures in place to protect personal data. However, the ICO acknowledged that Marriott contacted customers and the ICO quickly and has since installed multiple security measures to improve its systems.
