Elizabeth Denham spoke about data protection during a pandemic, in a recent keynote speech. She addressed some of the key questions have in response to the pandemic: '...Organisations asking how their staff can work on sensitive data from home? How they best collect customer details for contact tracing? Can they carry out tests to check whether staff have coronavirus?'. She praised the work of data protection experts who have been working to help businesses navigate this uncertain time.

Denham noted that data protection is getting harder to understand and that policies around data protection are under much more scrutiny. Denham asked businesses to consider the following:

Is your organisation’s relationship with customers is based only on functionality? Does your organisation’s confidence in your innovation blind you to the importance of building customer trust? Then you best hope that functionality doesn’t fail because the backlash could come quicker than you think.

However this isn't meant to be threatening, as Denham reinforced that the ICO is there to work with businesses and to help reduce the threat of fines and enforcement action. She closed the speech by discussing the Accountability Tool and how she believes that is it a key part of ensuring that your business is compliant and is protecting personal data. She stated that 'accountability, transparency, and data protection more broadly, are fundamental to the relationship you have with your customers'.
