Don’t forget that YOU are responsible for your actions. If you break the rules you will have to pay the consequences. We are all human and mistakes happen, as long as you have had your training and have taken reasonable precautions it is unlikely that you’ll get a fine, but break the law and you will have to pay! Take a look at the following report from the ICO.

A former Social Services Officer has been prosecuted for accessing Social Care records without authorisation. An internal investigation found that the worker had inappropriately accessed the Social Care records without any business need to do so. The records related to four individuals with the same name. The worker appeared before the Magistrates’ Court and admitted one offence of unlawfully obtaining personal data, in breach of s170 of the Data Protection Act 2018. She was sentenced to a 6 month conditional discharge, ordered to pay costs and a victim surcharge of almost £1000.
