GDPR For Sole-Traders

GDPR applies to all types of companies from the smallest sole-trader to the biggest multinational. It’s pretty obvious that the impact on a small company is likely to be less than on a huge organisation although in some cases even very small companies involved in AI and advanced technologies may have some pretty tricky issues to deal with.

The advantage that small companies have is that their operations tend to be less complicated, with less data to deal with and less complicated IT set-ups. Small companies tend to have clearer roles and responsibilities even if this means that one person does everything! Communication, training, and ongoing due-diligence is less complicated and it’s likely that issues will be identified and resolved more quickly. This is all good and means that GDPR should be less of a challenge for small companies.

Don’t forget that even if you are a one-person company GDPR still applies - all aspects of GDPR apply - and you still need to meet the underlying principles. You’ll need to ensure that you have all your policies and procedures in place and that you have taken appropriate safe-guards to protect your IT and any data you hold. Hopefully this will be pretty simple but you still need to make sure that you do this. You may still need to register with the ICO - this is mandatory for almost all companies. If you are not sure, you should take a look at our other blogs on ICO registration.

Don’t forget that if you have any questions please feel free to call us. We are always happy to help.

Good luck all.
