How To Handle A SAR

I know I have written blogs on this previously but there has been a worrying increase in the number of SARs reported to us. Many SARs are malicious and designed to annoy the recipient or to extort cash from the unlucky victim. I can’t stress enough that you must handle all SARs as if they are genuine. Regardless of the source or the fact that you think the SAR is fake, you must handle the SAR appropriately.

GDPR does give you some level of protection. You don’t necessarily need to respond to excessive SARs or repeated SARs, you can also extend the amount of time you take to respond if the SAR is complex. However, you MUST always respond even if your response is to reject the SAR.

This is a complex area and we will always try to help. There are tools on Optindigo to help you manage SARs and we have experience in handling even the most malicious SARs so please feel free to call us.

The best advice is to take all SARs seriously! Don’t miss the deadline for responses and always get advice before you reply. One last thing, you can always call the ICO if you need advice, they are usually helpful and will help you understand what you need to do.

Good luck all.
