I think there is general agreement that GDPR is going to make all of our lives
harder. I don’t think anyone would disagree with the need for improved data
protection regulation, but the implementation of GDPR leaves much to be
desired. However, we are looking at this as an opportunity!
At the heart of GDPR is the need for transparency – the need to be clear about
why companies are collecting data, what they are going to do with it and how
customers can manage their preferences. These seem like pretty simple concepts
but in practice this is going to be tricky for companies to implement.
Building technology to help migrate to GDPR and then to manage this on behalf
of your customers will give you a massive edge! A huge edge – a huge, valuable,
lucrative edge.
The regulations are still being written so its important to build flexibility into
your systems but act now! We are telling our customers that we are ‘GDPR
Ready’ – I think that is all we can reasonably claim. We can’t claim we are fully
compliant to regulations that are incomplete but ‘GDPR Ready’ sounds
reasonable.
We have technology to re-optin numbers, collect privacy statement agreements,
manage preferences and record changes. All of this will make us very popular.
Start now. Don’t delay.
Good luck.
